Remember that new character I was gonna upload, I dunno, a month ago? Here he is, finally, now that I have a scanner.
Anyway... This is Tarik (yes, I finally named him, with help from a random--but very nice--stranger from campus). You would not believe how much non-help I got from my friends... I thought I was asking for something very straightfoward: a Celtic/ Anglo Saxon/ Germanic/ Scandinavian name that was so old-sounding (as in Pre-Roman to c.1000 AD) that no one would use it as a name today (well, except for my Wiccan friends, but regardless). It also couldn't be something famous, like Beowulf, Breca, Hygelac, etc. No one could come up with anything; it was either the wrong region, the wrong time period, or something random like "Stapler". Thanks a lot, guys. Jordan, I thought you were a fellow history nerd.
Anyway... off rant. His name is Tarik. He's a human ranger. I didn't use a half-elf fighter! For a change! He's... I forget... 14? A lot younger than my normal characters. His cultural influence is very Celtic/Germanic, hence the name specs. I wasn't just being a nazi for fun, you know. He protects the sacred grove used by my brother's druid character.
Thanks! That means a lot coming from you. He was one of those late-night inspiration moments that I miss so terribly. I actually had the pose in my head first...I was reading Beowulf, and I wanted to catch the action. It was only after I finished him and decided he was adorable that I made him a PC.

It was. >.< At the end of it all, I was thinking, "why are my friends so useless?" Well, not really, but I was wondering what was so damn diffecult about making up an old sounding name. Reggie kept throwing Jewish names at me, because the only old names he can think of are biblical. Tivis would randomly say, "Fire Extinguisher! That's a good one!", And all Jordan gave me were names from Beowulf, which is exactly what I was trying to avoid. Oy vey.
It is good. It's the oldest known story (epic poem) written in English (it's Old/Middle English, but it still counts), written in about 700 AD, and was a major influence for Tolkien.

*laughs* She usually is, but not in this case. "Ooh! Lunchlady! That's perfect; you could give him The Hairnet of Smiting for a unique item!" The conversations we have...
Reggie was wonderfully useful, too:
"Ezekiel?"
"Jewish."
"Abraham."
"That's Jewish, too..."
"Joshua?"
"...Reggie..."
"Gabriel!"
"Reggie!"
"Huh?"
"Wrong region!"
"Oh... How about Aaron?"
"I hate you..."

Yep, that's pretty much how the conversation rolled. I was ready to bust some heads out of sheer exasperation.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.

Yeah, Tivis doesn't sound very helpful. "How about Toaster! Yeah, Toaster sounds good!"
